Harnessing AI for Education: Insights from the TASA/TASB TXed Conference
Texas Educators Are Interested in Ushering in a New Era: Responsible AI in Education
Last month, I had the opportunity to attend and present at the TASA/TASB TXed conference, one of the largest gatherings of Texas school board members and superintendents. As an AI governance expert, I’ve attended many conferences in various industries, but the size and energy of this event were unlike anything I had experienced before. It wasn’t just the scale of the conference that impressed me—it was the depth of engagement from the education leaders. Their commitment to exploring opportunities and impacts on education was refreshing and encouraging.
A New Era of AI in Education
AI has been a hot topic in many sectors, but education is uniquely positioned to benefit from the transformative potential of this technology. The TASA/TASB conference highlighted just how seriously Texas education leaders are taking AI. Throughout the event, I observed superintendents, board members, and educators eager to learn how AI could enhance learning outcomes, streamline administrative tasks, and improve overall operational efficiency. Their openness to innovation was inspiring, but it also underscored the importance of a structured approach to AI integration—one grounded in strong governance.
Why AI Governance Matters
As exciting as AI is, the need for proper governance cannot be overstated. When we talk about "harnessing AI," we’re not just talking about using the technology; we’re talking about ensuring that its implementation aligns with a school district’s ethical, operational, and educational goals. Without governance, AI can introduce risks—such as biases in data, privacy concerns, or over-reliance on technology—that could outweigh its benefits.
During my presentation, I emphasized how AI governance frameworks can provide educational institutions with the tools they need to responsibly implement AI solutions. These frameworks offer guidance on:
Data privacy and security: Ensuring that student data is handled responsibly and securely is paramount. AI systems must comply with federal and state regulations, such as FERPA, to protect sensitive information.
Ethical use of AI: Decisions driven by AI should be free from bias and ensure equitable access to educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their background.
Long-term sustainability: School districts need to ensure that AI investments deliver lasting value. Governance frameworks help align AI initiatives with educational objectives and financial sustainability.
